Hey! Back after a large break from lemmy and after returning to the community it seems it is more advice focused: what is the best way to learn programming vs story focused what is a bad mistake when you started programming.

My job as a moderator is to serve the community best I can, so instead of changing the rules to recklessly to bar topics further without consent, I want to extend an invitation for you, the members of the community, to share what you want to see content wise from this community.

Examples:

I like it as is!

or

New rules ideas

  • Only questions about cats are allowed
  • Posts about dogs will result in being banned

Thank you!

Evan

    rule idea:

    • Do not repeat topics/questions (make sure that the (topic/question) has already been addressed in the community.)

Within reason, I agree. Adding it on

I think asklemmy and helpmelemmy (or savemelemmy or helplemmy or advicelemmy or advice or lemmyadvice or lemmingsadvice or soslemmy or ohpleasegodhelpme or ohpleasesomeonehelpme or howwhywhenwhowhatwhichwhere) should be two different sublemmies. The sublemmy asklemmy I think should be more about the general lemmy community on this instance and their experiences and thoughts (ie. be story based).

I support the new rules, and anyone who disobeys gets this treatment : .

Seriously tho I like the idea that its advice-focused. My only preference is that ppl ask lemmy support-type questions in other places like !lemmy_support@lemmy.ml.

This is a wonderful thought, I have updated the rules to include a note about that

I like it to be advice based but for more open ended questions. Not really specific questions for a specific topic. More like FOSS and everything technology and this lemmy.

The current rules look good, expect for “Legal under US law”, that should go. We have a code of conduct for the site, so there is no reason to refer to the laws of some random country.

I’d say asklemmy for every question that doesn’t fit in any other category (existing community) without much thinking, or not in any other somewhat popular community at least

unrelated but i propose that you change the icon. it makes it look like we all have no clue. i would suggest a megaphone with waves or something (to represent a broadcast). or something. idk. thats just my opinion.

    relate to the original topic:
i see what you’re saying. it’s like /c/advice vs a true /c/askXYZ. i don’t have a stance on it. although i hadnt really thought about it too much.

a megaphone makes it look like we all have no clue AND we’re shouting at each other tho

        /c/advice is like this.
they could make a quick swap of icons and it would be better.
remove the person because that resembles ego.
it’s not about ego. it’s about communication.
