You demanded they do this. You said zero covid was a human rights violation. You got your wish. Now shut up.

This is a response to domestic demands. China doesn’t give af about public opinion in other countries, least of all the US. I don’t necessarily think they’ve done awfully, but from what I’ve heard they didn’t really use the time they bought with the zero COVID policy very well to prepare for when they would eventually need to lift the zero COVID policy.

It’s unclear to me how well China’s population is protected. There are two questions that seem to top the list. First, how immune are individuals? Do they have the vaccinations necessary to handle this strain of COVID-19? Second, how well equipped is the health care system? Is there enough capacity to handle patients coming in? How are stockpiles of pharmaceuticals that have been shown to be effective in treating acute COVID-19 infections?

More things to consider: are there mask mandates and are FFP2/3 level masks used? How widely air purifiers are used to reduce virus levels in air?

I’m not sure about air purifiers, but my impression is that China is really good about masks, mandate or no. They’ve already gone through a fairly recent airborne pandemic and it became a cultural norm to wear a mask when possibly sick.
