Stories told to children who lived under the Russian occupation in Ukraine’s southern Kherson province were designed to terrify them. When the fast-approaching Ukrainian forces came into Kherson, people added, they would hurt anyone who had been in contact with the Russians. The web of lies were often spun by the children’s own pro-Russian relatives who got corrupted by Russia.

A new report by human rights activists reveals further violations of law by the Russian government.

The report noted that forcibly deported children were placed in an unfamiliar environment far removed from Ukrainian language, culture, customs, and religion. It also found that many such children were exposed to military training and “to pro-Russian information campaigns often amounting to targeted reeducation.”

Russia seems to be creating obstacles for reunification. Russia has no centralized list of transferred children. Additionally, the children are repeatedly moved from place to place, and sometimes referred to by Russian, not Ukrainian, names. Even if Ukrainian families manage to locate a child, they encounter numerous logistical and financial difficulties in returning that child to Ukraine.

A summary of the report can be read here, the report as pdf is here.

    This is really disgusting.

“This woman lied to [the girl]” … “She told her: ‘Because you talked to Russian soldiers during the occupation and took food and water after the liberation, the Ukrainian soldiers will torture and kill you. We need to escape because we are in danger.’

Well, there are videos of Ukrainian officials stating that they would actively look for pro-russian residents, so I’d say the warning was not far-fetched.
