  • This is absolutely baffling being from practically any other English speaking country.

I mean, we have our share of crazies, but they’re a tiny proportion.

It’s one thing to doubt the well established climate science (very frustrating), but it’s another thing to actually believe humans can precisely control the weather.

It’s extremely troubling knowing these people exist, and can vote in the most powerful country on earth.

    😬

Something, something if you believe in things without evidence (religion) it’s not actually that surprising. And we (Australia) are much less religious than you. Though, this is certainly my bias talking.

  • I fundamentally disagree (on a social level). Social dance mfers don’t even start until 9:30PM, most people rock up at 10:30PM

This some oppressive shit if you want to be up at 7 if that’s your body clock.

    I want to sleep hombre.

I want to be up with the sun friend.

Where are my 6PM socials. Hurt.

  • “it’s like, they only took the best ideas, and then only improved on those ideas after adding them into their society!”

Yikes 💀 I wonder if they really paid attention to all the slavery, patriarchy, oligarchy, incest (the whole, you’re not related unless it’s on your father’s side thing), genocide, etc lol

I find it interesting because there is a lot about Roman society that’s more recognisable today than in the middle ages, the politics is exciting, and yeah, the organisation of the military is also fascinating.

But I’m glad to not have yet met anyone who actually admires the Roman Empire. They were barbaric and cruel, often by ancient standards.

  • Edit before send: just realised you wrote “developers” not “engineers”. (What is the difference?)

I think this mostly applies to software engineers, rather than “regular” engineers. On the topic, am I the only one who thinks people should specify “software”, not just say engineer?

I may be biased, but when someone just answers “engineer” I assume they mean of the “physical” variety (mechanical, civil, structural, chemical, etc), not software.

I mean, I don’t really know how we’re defining an engineer these days, we don’t all work with engines, so I suppose that’s out the window. Just don’t know where we’re drawing the line.

An accountant does problem solving, and takes inputs and outputs to do calculations. Are we calling them money engineers now?

    This genuinely confuses me haha

  • I am extremely cynical about the semi-frequent “fun runs” to raise money for cancer research or whatever in my city. It’s usually upper middle / upper class people feeling good about themselves for raising a couple of hundred bucks each, and diverting traffic and trams on the weekend (when this affected me I was a cafe worker commuting on the weekends).

You know how else we could fund this cancer research, and way more than your feel-good bullshit? Oh yeah, we could tax you properly. No more capital gains discount, etc.

I feel the same about Movember and my company promoting it. You know how else we could raise money for men’s health, company, you could pay more in tax. Just like a tiny bit more would be waaaaay more than the piddly little tax free donation you’re kicking in.

Charity fund-raising is only necessary because of the failure of the state, mostly. In my opinion.

  • In response to both comments in the tree. This logic makes no sense. Having your finger cut off or your hand cut off are both unacceptable, but one sure is preferable. You can say “I don’t like it! I don’t agree to either”, but it’s just putting your head in the sand.

“Both sides” being equally bad is complete nonsense. The Democrats sure are a right wing party by international standards, and pertetuators of inequality and the status quo of capitalism, and US imperialism. However, you are blind if you think the Republicans aren’t worse.

Stop having a hard-on for revolution, because it almost always ends up producing undesired results.

Revolution in the USA pretty much means civil war, and if you’re being honest with yourself, you know it.

  • No, it’s just a fundamental, inescapable fact of your voting system that voting for a candidate that won’t win, instead of voting for the candidate who might win and you’d prefer over the other most likely candidate, is a vote for the candidate you’d prefer less.

Please look up the spoiler effect earnestly (cgpgrey has a passable video on the topic). It’s not the voters fault they’re forced into voting for candidates that aren’t their favourite, it’s the voting system’s fault.

    Edit for your convenience: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=3Y3jE3B8HsE

As a citizen of one of the US’s vassal states, I can’t vote, but this shit affects us all, as the US is the world overlord. A trump presidency would be devastating, in my point of view.

Please fucking vote for the Dems if you’d prefer them over the Republicans. Please learn how your terrible system actually works. This vassal begs you.

Oh and campaign to improve the voting system so you can actually vote for the candidates you like best.
