On lemmy.ml there are 3 comments as of writing this comment, but I can’t see them from my instance.

I run my instance on there and I pay $5 USD a month for it and so far I’m happy about it. You can choose where the server is located, although I don’t know if that determines whether DO will take down your server as @pimento@lemmygrad.ml said since they’re based in the US. My DO server is in Germany.

Also, that people post stuff that isn’t really the theme of the subreddit. For example, on r/whatcouldgowrong someone will post a video of using their phone and then it slips out of their hand and cracks on the ground with the title “WCGW using your phone”. It’s not like they were standing on top of a moving vehicle or something they just were clumsy and broke their phone.

How the userbase is constantly bombarding the site with alternate versions of the same meme. Everything just feels so try-hard.

Lol. I click on this meme that has 30 comments, block a person, and now I see 3.

I wouldn’t say that, but I don’t think I would like much more recoil.

Bonus cat as well…

I luckily had a family member who lived next door to an employee at the company who had a lot of clout. They interviewed me and I got the job.

But I switched careers to programming after about 2.5 years, so I kind of had to look for a first job twice since I’d never worked in IT. Went to a coding bootcamp and when I graduated I applied to a bunch of places and didn’t get hired for 3 months.

I’m not good with interviews either. I don’t know what your situation is but you have to remember that it’s probably not the end of the world if you don’t get an offer. You’ll get another interview in the future. Hunting for jobs fucking sucks, but we all have to do it from time to time.

Best place online to buy a new laptop?

My friend is looking to buy a chrome book or pixel book (he’s not technical at all) and said he’s read about resellers selling older models as if they’re new. Any truth to this? If so, where would you buy one?..

I’m sorry, what?

I disagree, but another reason to block this is because I know where this new age garbage leads to. It leads to stuff like QAnon and BS conspiracy theories about lizard people. I used to sort of be into this stuff back in college.

Adding this to my blocklist since there’s some heavy anti-vaxx sentiment going on there.

It’s a copypasta

I just downvoted your comment.

FAQ

What does this mean?

The amount of karma (points) on your comment has decreased by one.

Why did you do this?

There are several reasons I may deem a comment to be unworthy of positive or neutral karma. These include, but are not limited to:

• Rudeness towards other Lemmy users, • Spreading incorrect information, • Sarcasm not correctly flagged with a /s.

Am I banned from Lemmy?

No - not yet. But you should refrain from making comments like this in the future. Otherwise I will be forced to issue an additional downvote.

I don’t believe my comment deserved a downvote. Can you un-downvote it?

Sure, mistakes happen. But only in exceedingly rare circumstances will I undo a downvote. If you would like to issue an appeal, shoot me a private message explaining what I got wrong. I tend to respond to Lemmy PMs within several minutes. Do note, however, that over 99.9% of downvote appeals are rejected, and yours is likely no exception.

How can I prevent this from happening in the future?

Accept the downvote and move on. But learn from this mistake: your behavior will not be tolerated on Lemmy. I will continue to issue downvotes until you improve your conduct.

In your lemmy.hjson file, you’ll need to add instances to your allow list by domain name:

# list of instances with which federation is allowed
# allowed_instances: ["instance1.tld","instance2.tld"]
# instances which we never federate anything with (but previously federated objects are unaffected)
# blocked_instances: []

If you want, tell me your instance and I’ll add you to my allow list (midwest.social)
