The world just had the hottest week on record, according to preliminary data. It follows the hottest June on record, with unprecedented sea surface temperatures and record low Antarctic sea ice extent.
and it’s only going to get worse! this is tragic.
Exactly. Shoots my anxiety all the way up because it’s not shit I can do about it. The people who can change things don’t give af.
i live in bumfuck nowhere USA and the extreme weather events we’ve experienced over even just the past few years is insane. 100 year floods happening every couple years, tornados hitting the same areas over and over, prolonged droughts, insanely high wind storms, etc… it’s bonkers. i’ve already said to a few people we need to start updating our building codes to meet or exceed that of hard hit hurricane areas because pretty soon we’re going to be uninsurable too.
Infrastructure will definitely be effected. It’s the same where I live, the weather has been nuts lately. This stuff is happening collectively around the whole world and yet we still have people acting like it’s business as usual. Unfortunately, nothing will be done until something catastrophic happens. And by then, it’ll be to late.
Our rulers are hell-bent on killing off the majority of life on this planet, including our species. Can’t help but wonder if people will ever wake up and do the obvious.
Only when profits fall, as a result.
The thing is that nobody has worked out how to make climate action profitable. Or at least not profitable in the short term.
That’s simply not true, there are a bunch of companies that focus on sustainability that use it as their main business model. Sustainability is profitable in many cases. Look at how well solar panels sell for example, good luck finding a contractor that can place them in the next couple of months (they are all booked).
The main issue is that companies with old business models, that cannot easily change, hold the majority of the power. Look at for instance Shell, they are not really making a switch and are still actively polluting villages in Africa to pump their oil.
The majority of life ? lmao, nope
The current world average temperature is around 14-15°C.
During the Cambrian explosion, where the amount of different lifeforms on earth increased dramatically, it was 20-25°C.
And we’re not even going to die off anyway. Some currently populated areas are just going to get depopulated real fast, that’s all. And we’re going to build new cities in different places that were too cold for us before, or maybe underground. Some lifeforms will die off because they were too fragile, others will appear and thrive. Same as it’s always happened.
Plenty of low-hanging fruit we can get rid of immediately to help slow this down. Like private jets. There’s no reason they need to exist.
It doesn’t have to be this way.
