They were great creatures. I miss them!
Would you tell us a story about them?
I sure can. I had a group of about 10 ducks. I moved out to the country where I had a good sized pond. At that pond was a very friendly mallard. He would come up and see us. We decided “Hey, duckie might like some friends.” So we ordered some. As they grew older and learned to fly, the mallard would lead them to the pond. We also started keeping the ducks penned up at night to protect them from coyotes.
These ducks got into a routine. In the morning, I’d let them out and they’d go to the pond. Around 7pm or so, a group of loud quacking ducks would alert me to shut their pen. If for some reason they didn’t want to come in at night, all I had to do was take an old coffee can with some dog food and shake it. It would immediately cause them to come waddling back!
Aw man! That’s adorable. I love the feeling of quiet and outdoors in the picture you paint! That’s hilarious about that very sociable mallard. Daddy McDuck!
We called him Brownie Duck. He was there when the last people lived there. So he got to live out the rest of his life with a group of friends!
