Late night tweet from the official PlayStation X account confirms they will no longer force the linking of your PSN account to your PC copy of Helldivers 2.
Too little too late. I was legitimately looking to buy Helldivers 2 a couple weeks ago, but ended up getting hooked on The Talos Principle 2 instead. Now I just straight up don’t trust Sony not to pull their usual bullshit again in the future, so they’ll not be getting my money (and I doubt I’m the only one who has been completely turned off buying the game as a result of this.)
Talos 2 was great. The first game is also incredible if you haven’t played it.
I’ll definitely keep an eye out on sony games from now on and avoid it lime the plague
Good.
“Helldivers fans – we’ve heard your feedback on the Helldivers 2 account linking update. The May 6 update, which would have required Steam and PlayStation Network account linking for new players and for current players beginning May 30, will not be moving forward.
We’re still learning what is best for PC players and your feedback has been invaluable. Thanks again for your continued support of Helldivers 2 and we’ll keep you updated on future plans.”

Translation:
We didn’t expect Steam to side with the people we’re trying to extort and we don’t want to foot the bill for the refunds
Democracy.
Now what about Minecraft and having to get an Xbox account.
People didn’t care as much for some reason. They got a free cape and most were happy with that. You also weren’t going to lose your Minecraft account for living in the wrong country 🤷♂️
Plus it let you play cross platform with everyone (not on java)
True, I guess there was more of an incentive to Microsoft accounts than just capes
That’s not the first time an account migration has happened with Minecraft btw.
My only complaint is that there was a cutoff date for migration. Even if the migration phase was 2 years long.
Also to keep in mind: both migrations were from one account to another, you keep one account regardless. In the Helldivers case it was going to be 1 accounts to 2 accounts, with 2 distinct entities controlling how you can play (Steam and Sony-Playstation).
