An American Airlines flight bound for Boston was forced to abort takeoff at Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport on Wednesday morning to avoid another plane that was landing.
The Federal Aviation Administration said it’s investigating what happened. It’s the second such incident at the Washington, DC, airport in the last six weeks.
“An air traffic controller cancelled the takeoff clearance for American Airlines Flight 2134 because another aircraft was cleared to land on an intersecting runway,” the FAA said in a statement about Wednesday’s scare.
On the upshot they will be adding even more flights out of DCA soon. Surely, there will be no issues with flight traffic controllers being under even more pressure to move aircraft along as fast as possible. /s
That said, at least the system of multiple safety systems and checks has been working. I’d be curious to see (and hopefully the report on the incident will explain) how those two aircraft ended up on a collision course. Also, what was it that caught the potential collision? It shouldn’t have happened in the first place, but learning what prevented it could help prevent other accidents elsewhere in the future.
The ATC has never been this understaffed and overworked. There are going to be disasters.
Idiots are not hiring.
