“Schools just stopped buying books from us because they didn’t want to have the appearance of supporting controversial literature”

It’s upsetting to see these words uttered in relation to a bookstore just trying to help LGBT+ access literature that better includes and represents them.

It’s upsetting to call books with queer themes “controversial literature.” The princess kissing Sleeping Beauty is as “controversial” as the prince doing it.

But a lot of these bigots think that any book with any sort of even minorly queer theme means that first graders are going to see ass fucking close-up or something.

That’s the other thing. These idiots trying to ban books don’t realize that most kids have already seen far worse than anything that would be in any book in a school library just by growing up in the era of the internet.

Even before the internet. My public library had Playboys. Do you know how easy it was to sneak it out of the periodicals section when you were in elementary school? The absolute worst they could do is take it away from you and get mad at you.

Upsetting is an understatement. It’s an infringement of rights. Many parents can’t help educate their kids on understanding sexuality or gender outside of their own experience. Imagine only having access to information and relatable experiences about such an important part of yourself from the internet. It’s hard enough for them without disinformation campaigns and trolls in the mix.

Well, then I guess he’d better take action and use his position in government to fight back, right? He’ll do something meaningful to push back on crazy conservatives, right? Right…?

Man… Pete, I voted for you in the primary all those years ago. What happened to you.

Not at all. He just hasn’t done a lot of things that is in keeping with his promises on the campaign trail. He’s definitely effective as an administrator, but I suppose he’s just not good at being a politician. He’s too honest.

Good point. I suppose that personal integrity would compel him to keep the promises that he made on the campaign trail. But that’s probably too idealistic.
