So, of all the checks and balances and having three branches of government, one branch is able to take all the power just by signing a single piece of paper giving themselves the power? That… Makes so much sense

Legally? No. But it’s really highlighting the issue that the legislative and judicial branches don’t have the ability to enforce anything since all law enforcement agencies are controlled by the executive. Their power depends on people agreeing they have that power.

And, the last gasp of democracy happens with the stroke of a pen.

Even if Trump is somehow removed from office, it will take a strong person to give up the power gained. The USA can no longer pretend it’s a democracy.

Congress has been giving the executive more and more power every administration for a long, long time. Any time the executive actually wields this massive amount of power they have been given by Congress, people rightfully worry about how strong the executive has gotten.

It has long been time for Congress to restrict the executive, to take back much of the power Congress gave to the executive. And I hope everyone remembers this when their preferred party is in power in the future. A consistent voice is required here to reduce the power of the executive, one’s preferred party will not always be the one in power, and it is best to keep that in mind anytime there is a bill giving the executive power (or a lack of a bill taking power back).

So, whoever took an oath to defend the US against enemies foreign and domestic should be on the way to the White House to finally fulfill their oath.
