Has anyone had issues with Lagavulin having inconsistent quality? Some bottles of the 16yo are great, and also have quite a strong peaty flavor. Other bottles have almost no smoke, and in general just taste “okay”. It’s not just about the smoke. The whisky itself is inconsistent. All bottles I tried are freshly opened. I think it’s about a 50/50 chance of getting a nice tasting whisky. Any explanation for this? Are there fake bottles making the rounds out there? Is there a way to spot the good bottles from the bad? Please help! this used to be my favorite whisky, but now I don’t know anymore…
The only probably I had was jacking up costs 50%, other than that the quality has been fine for me but I haven’t purchased it since it exceed $100/bottle
Ron Swanson effect?
I mean he was the reason I started drinking it but that was like 8 years ago or something. I love the stuff but nothing justifies that cost to me.
16 was still $75 last time I saw it at Costco. Total wine I think near me is $80. If those are options for you, I think it’s great at those prices but at $100+ other interesting things are available
Are you able to do back to back tastings with both bottles with someone who isn’t clued in to your hypothesis?
No, I‘ve had no problems so far.
They’re single malt, there is bound to be differences between batches. I’ve never had one i felt was bad though
