    Get an Apple Watch.

Obviously a bit tongue in cheek as not everyone can afford it, but my phone hasn’t made a sound for 7 years and I love it so much.

Also, my colleagues phone blares out We are the Champions EVERU FUCKING TIME it rings and it fucks me off no end, so I think alerts can be selfish AF (whilst I appreciate that people are more concerned re dings than ring tones here)

A $40 Mi Band will do the same. I have one to track my sleep (it works better than my Apple Watch) and it was my daily watch for many years.

I got an Apple Watch just for my fitness tracking and actually I found it bizarre that you can’t just turn off all notifications, you have to toggle them off by every app individually! I don’t want my wrist buzzing all day, I want less distractions not more.

my phone hasn’t made a sound for 7 years and I love it so much.

Well, I have a bad news for you, they broke the notification on the Apple Watch with iOS17.

You used to get notifications / wake up alarm only on your watch if it was unlocked.

Now even if my watch is unlocked and on my wrist and my phone is locked, my phone will get the notification and 5 seconds later my watch will get the same. It’s annoying af.

They also did something to the notification/vibration with the latest watchOS version because both my medication reminder and my wake up alarm on my watch no longer wake me up, the vibration is much more attenuated than before. Maybe it’s a ultra 2 defect?

The vibration is quieter, too. You can’t hear if your phone is being called when on Do Not Disturb unless you have an Apple Watch.

That’s the one thing Apple still struggles with in iOS, is customization of the small things like notification sounds, they’ll make random changes on their end, but nothing that the users can accept or even revert back on.

What? I’ve had custom ring and message sounds for years. It’s been so long I honestly don’t remember how I did it though. Had to convert to a specific format in iTunes etc, so while not super intuitive, it’s absolutely doable

Idk why they didn’t lean into customisation more, people went wild for jail breaking their phones just for that. I’d be willing to bet they’d make a pretty petty with cheap options to purchase the same as ring tones and such

customization of the small things like notification sounds

Or even customisation of notification persistence on a per-mailbox basis in the Mail app. I only want persistent notifications for my work email, not my personal ones.

The lockscreen torch/camera buttons are still the best example of limited customisation though

It should sound the same on my phone. Mine hasn’t made a notification sound since I got it, as the mute button is permanently set.

In 2023, it seems odd that we can personalize widgets, wallpapers, and lockscreens, yet changing the default notification sound remains not possible. It’s even more puzzling that you can customize notification sounds for default apps like reminders and messages. I mean I don’t wanna come off as an Android kid here, but Apple, really?

The fact you can do it for proprietary apps only shows that.

      1. Apple is fully capable of doing so for any/all apps. Actively, right now, it wouldn’t even be hard.
      2. Does not care about the convenience of its customer base, let alone the complaints and frankly decades of user input and suggestions.
      3. Is greedy (like always), they don’t give a shit about giving you a good product, just one that’s ’good enough’ to take your money, but they have to ration commonplace features so they have something new for next year (that has been a feature elsewhere for 5)

Watch, in a year or two they’ll try selling the new model and tag it as “Now with the ability to set sounds for ALL your apps! Amazing! WOW! Innovation!”…… it’s classic Apple, they think they’re the best because their head is so far up their own ass that all they see around them is shit.

The associated haptic vibration is also weaker, and harder to feel.

every time anyone posts anything to do with sounds the Mute Mode Supremacy crowd always come out in force to smugly post about their silence. Good for you guys, make your choices, but idk maybe read the articles you’re commenting on.

      Y’all feel vibrations? Lol.

I thought I was hallucinating, the vibrations are definitely shorter than before. Only SMS/iMessage had the short vibration before, now all notifications are the same length and it isn’t changeable.

Make it a Bit quieter and the world can breath again. I love this move! Removing mass annoyance <3
