    I appreciate your reservations about generalizing entire populations, but in this case I feel the context implies that RMiddleton is referring to a subset of Americans who share an extremist and victimized mindset and happen to represent an alarmingly sizable minority of white Americans.

    (I apologize if I’m over explaining or misunderstanding your dissent, but hopefully this is helpful)

    It could perhaps more accurately be termed “low-income white Americans who have been disserviced by their life experiences and our educational system and now are loudly anti-tolerance due to their discontent with their poverty when faced with the reality that their primary demographic, straight white men, have historically done exceptionally well in our society but are not provided the same degree of favor their fathers and grandfathers were.”

    It’s a mouthful, but it’s the generous interpretation I believe was intended. It’s specifically the subset that have internalized the superiority complex that encourages racism and/or sexism, and which is threatened most acutely by overall worsening economic conditions.
