Hey everyone, I recently acquired the 4k77, 4k80, and 4k83. However, the 4k80 one looks grainy. 77 and 83 look clear in comparison. Did I just get a bad copy, or does 4k80 have issues?

4k77, 4k80, and 4k83 are the names given to the fan attempt to digitize the original 35mm film reel verisons of the star wars trilogy.

I think OP is confusing TV screen size with frames-per-second. Good thing they didn’t try going 144Hz or they’d have needed to take out a second mortgage.

The question was already answered, so I thought I’d be funny.

So let me get this straight.

You’re being purposely opaque (aka, those in the knows comment) with sharing information around here?

Wouldn’t it be conducive sharing context here instead of a 4 character title most people (will use their preferred search engine) in the first place will have to search for?

There is two editions of them one with digital noise reduction and one without. You probably got the “No DNR” version of 4k80.

I think archive.org has both. the file/torrent name should be the same just with “DNR” instead of “No DNR”

Were you watching 4K77 and 4K83 with Digital Noise Reduction? The movies are distributed in two versions, one with film grain and the other with DNR.

There are multiple versions. I suggest you get these from the official site (free, but donations support the cost of equipment, purchasing film reels, and HDD space) and make sure you have the most recent 4K version. I don’t think you will know with certainty which version you have if you try to get this through other means.

I get the sense it was a tricky restoration due to the film stock (and film scanning equipment) they had available, which was spread across 16mm, Kodak 35mm, and Fuji 35mm (which had better colour preservation but was incomplete). They explain it much better on their website, but it is an iterative process, and earlier versions might have a different quality.

When I looked, I needed a code form a current member to join. So I’m out of luck, and the website said if you can’t get the code, then just get it from the usual sites.

Can you send me a link to the site please? I think I joined when the 1080? 77 was released, but I can’t remember the name of the site. It’s been a while.

If I am a member, I’ll see if I can send you a code 👍

I’ve had a look, and I wasn’t a member. I’ve seen the site before, but apparently you didnt have to be a member back then.

I do have some good news though - I’m a member now :D

You just need to click through to the forums and read the sticky mesage that asks if you’re looking for the projects. It gives you the code that you need. I won’t post the link here publicly, but I’ll message you now, in case you can’t see it for whatever reason :)

Darn. I have no idea where I got my code and don’t have one to share (I just looked on my profile). It looks like others have helped out. FYI the latest 4K version (1.0) is from February…
