See… this is the point at which the whole conservative covid reaction, to me, goes from just weird and unsettling to full-on bug-eyed insane. AND hypocritical.
Their whole deal with masks and vaccines is that they should have the right to decide for themselves. I think they make dumbass decisions that cause entirely avoidable harm, but okay - I can grant at least some bare semblace of legitimacy to self-determination. I don’t vagree, but at least I can see their underlying logic.
But banning masks? What the actual fuck? What possible difference can it make in their lives that somebody else is wearing a mask? And what happened to their whole self-determination thing? Do they sincerely believe that nobody should be able to tell them whether or not they have to wear a madk and that they should be able to tell other people whether or not they can? How does that even work inside their brains? What possible logic leads to “I don’t have to do what you say but you DO have to do what I say”?
Seriously, are they literally insane? I sincerely can’t think of any other explanation. It’s not just people acting in some way other than my preference, but people acting in a way that’s blitheringly irrational, even by their own principles.
I suspect that when future historians write about this era, they’re going to call it something like The Idiot Age, because to them it will be marked by people inexplicably doing obviously and painfully stupid and irrational things.
Their whole deal with masks and vaccines is that they should have the right to decide for themselves.
Close, that’s what they said they believe. Anyone watching them actually behave during the pandemic knew that anyone wearing a mask was liable to be attacked by these brainless psychos ranting about the “kung flu” or whatever other racist name they had for it merely for wearing a mask in their presence.
I wasn’t directly attacked but my friend and I had the same experience in our 60% Trump area.
We weren’t together when each incident happened, but they’re so similar I’ll describe them together.
We were just at the checkout: me at a convenience store; my friend at a major grocery store chain.
So, we couldn’t reasonably move away. We had to stand there to pay for our purchases.
An old man encroached my space; an old woman encroached my friend’s space. We both politely asked them to step back for social distancing, and they refused.
I wish I had my friend’s ability to think and speak on his feet. After he checked out, he told the old lady “I asked for you to do something, that cost you nothing. All you had to do was take a few steps back. I hope in the future, if you ask someone the same, they treat you like you did to me.”
As for me? Even though I just said my request and didn’t respond further, the guy was a huge jerk who tailgated me for several miles in his huge pickup truck. Like headlights in my mirror tailgating… during the day.
Who tf cares that much? Honestly… just take a few steps back. Doesn’t cost you anything, like my friend said.
As for me? Even though I just said my request and didn’t respond further, the guy was a huge jerk who tailgated me for several miles in his huge pickup truck. Like headlights in my mirror tailgating… during the day.
And then they wonder why people don’t want them on lemmy.
They don’t believe anything. They think what they’re told to think. They check Fox News all day every day to make sure what they’re supposed to think hasn’t changed but they have no beliefs. And they’re willing to go along with literally anything as long as it doesn’t require critical thinking. It’s terrifying and sad.
They were lying. They said they supported self-determination to throw out the existing laws, and with those laws gone they passed laws that enforced their morals, which was the ultimate end goal.
Their whole deal with masks and vaccines is that they should have the right to decide for themselves.
Yeah, and before the Civil War the South’s rhetoric was that they should have the right to decide for themselves whether to allow slavery, but if you look at the constitution of the confederacy it doesn’t exactly allow the member states to choose not to allow slavery. It’s all opportunistic.
They are lying, plain and simple. From pot, to interracial marriages they have always been the party that’s the most obsessed with controlling people’s personal lives. Everytime we act surprised about the “hypocrisy” were playing into their propaganda. They want to build Gilead and will tell people what ever gets them closer to their white nationalist goals.
I mean, businesses like these want their employees to look the same.
Having some wear masks and some not is jarring for the pearl-clutchers of the world.
To be honest, if any of you put a little bit of thought into this, you’d come up with some pretty rational conclusions.
Whether you agree with the policy or not is up to you. But trying to argue they’re ‘literally insane’ is just hyperbole to cover up your lack of understanding and insight into the situation.
So that is a reasonable take? They don’t want people to wear masks because they’ll look different? That’s a lot of justification for an absurd corporate mandate.
If they actually cared about safety and consistency, they would make mask wearing required for everyone. But they don’t care about consistency because they argued at first that everyone should have their own choice, and they don’t care about safety because they are now banning usage of PPE. The article states that In-In-Out’s statement was about being able to see people’s faces, not uniform consistency. The article also mentions a specific location that was shut down due to vaccine mandate violations, which corporate appears to have supported, which has nothing to do with uniform consistency and everything to do with some very specific political nonsense. Your argument really doesn’t hold water, and it should be a serious offense to prevent a worker from using safety equipment. Especially safety equipment that has a good chance of keeping them from having to use any sick days (do they even get sick days?).

Dealt with that shit a lot. Thankfully the old “My grandma has cancer and I don’t want to be the one to kill her” line usually worked.

The Great Polarization
It’s not a new thing, it’s the slave master’s concept of rights: “It is my right to to take away other people’s rights.”
I mean, businesses like these want their employees to look the same.

Chains like these care a lot about consistency across their brand.
Being in the workforce for 40 years now I do understand how corporations feel.
Masks help in general. And if an employee who has a cold wants to wear a mask that’s a net benefit for customers and society.
Maybe I have more faith in the American people to NOT FREAK the fuck out if they walk into somewhere that has a masked worker.
Probably unreasonable. Ideas of personal choice - until it comes to something where people disagree. Then personal choice gets removed.
These businesses care a lot about presentation.
While it would be nice if people viewed wearing masks in a restaurant as cleaner and more-inviting, that’s just not the case.
People have evolved to become suspicious of those who cover their faces.
I guess it really says something about those people who view masks as an attack on themselves based on your statements
I don’t think viewing someone as suspicious is the same as them attacking you.
Ok

No, they don’t care.
They care about optics, which they’ve concluded will make them more money than logic or reason.
