I believe you can grow them as long as they are more than 150 feet from a white pine tree. The plants were originally banned because they were blamed for some sort of disease that jeopardized the lumber industry.
So I was curious as to why they are illegal, and it turns out it’s because they are highly susceptible to white pine blister rust which could wipe out the pine trees here. Apparently restrictions have eased on plants that are resistant to the disease, but I’m guessing there isn’t a lot of effort to farm them here because I imagine that is quite expensive to get resistant plants and all that.
The plant itself is, you can get foods made with it.
