Sad news tonight. Nintendo of America has requested for 717 games and their images to be removed from The Vault. Each download plus it’s box art and screen shots are no longer available.
well this took literal years longer then I thought it would.
If you look at the replies a lot of people are thinking copyright trolls are responsible and it’s not actually Nintendo
They said the same thing when the Garry’s Mod takedowns were issues and Nintendo later confirmed it was them. So, I’m not gonna hold my breath
Even if it wasn’t trolls it doesn’t sound like they were willing to take the risk
I don’t really use vimm’s layer since everything is on archive.org that I wan’t (it plus aria2 is quite nice) but it would be nice if they could put them back up
Fair enough. Most people don’t seem to use Vimm’s Lair for downloading sets. They mostly seem to use it for sporadically downloading a couple titles. Especially for newer systems like the PS3 or Wii for example.
Their labeling of what hasn’t been archived is also neat to see.

I feel like they are trying to push Japanese laws regarding piracy and console modding on the rest of the world.
Nintendo seems to be going harder than ever. Probably preparing for their new console which I will never buy out of principle.
Would you not buy it at all or buy it used then mod it afterwards to run your “homebrew” applications?
With the steam deck and the various related options out there, wouldn’t it make more sense to get one of those and run some emulation?
Note: I haven’t bought anything Nintendo since the 3DS.
It depends what a person values.
I’ll use the 3DS as an example. If you have some games that need you to go back and forth frequently between the touchscreen and buttons it might be a bit awkward to do that on the Steam Deck.
It’s also sometimes easier to run your backed up games on the original console versus tinkering with settings.
That’s certainly a possibility
I imagine a lot of people are in that mindset. They want to try out a console that’s a little past it’s prime and not pay collector or new prices for games that are only a few years old.
When is Nintendo going to learn that you can’t beat pirates? It’s impossible.
30 years after the rest of the world, so estimates are probably 30 years after the heat death of the universe.
I mean the piracy community is a hydra, if you cut off one head there’s another waiting, but they do make it annoying. Look at how many websites are hesitant about posting Switch content. It might be a “dragging heels in the sand situation” but it does provide a bit of resistance towards piracy.
All that said I don’t think Nintendo realizes how many people are in the piracy headspace of “they wouldn’t have purchased it even if piracy wasn’t an option”. I imagine a lot of people who pirate Switch games don’t even own a Switch. They just want to play one or two games don’t view the cost of the console and game as worth it.
Now more than ever I wish the Purge was real so I could steal a car, drive over there to their HQ, and then absolutely destroy the place. They deserve it.
If the purge was real they’d have a private security firm there to turn you into a reddish paste.
The entire point (aside from being violence bait) of the movies is that the violence is a tool of the ruling class to keep the masses at each others throats.
I wouldn’t know the point of the movies since I rarely watch live action movies anymore, but neither that or the security firm thing would stop me from trying. I’m a stubborn, pig-headed individual at times and this is one of those times.
This fictional universe you would rather live in than reality?
You realize the security firm in this case would be sporting hardware that would make you a stain on the wall in 2 seconds from “trying”.

Don’t think I’ve heard anything about that. Closest I can recall is when someone was accidentally sent some Magic the Gathering cards last year that weren’t released and the manufacturers decided to send Pinkerton goons to get them back.

717 is an interesting number. I’m guessing that’s the entire NES library.
I don’t think so. Tetris is still up for example and some SNES games have been taken down. It seems quite sporadic.
Is there a list anywhere of what was taken down?
I am not sure. There might be a changelog or a reply that has it but I haven’t stumbled across it

Dozens of places. You can search ROMs megathread online and a list of some will come up

I don’t even play games anymore but this makes me want to pirate everything Nintendo owns.
