Normal won 20 arguments. Garfield blocked 400k accounts.

Seems blocking was probably a good call

Pretty sure I haven’t posted this one before, I have like a big folder of Garfield memes to post and sometimes I get mixed up with which ones I’ve posted already and which I haven’t

You gotta flex that excell muscle. Really dive into a robust sheet with meme descriptions, dates, communities posted in, the whole nine lives. A pivot table or three, and colors changing depending on certain Garfield facts.

I try to reserve blocking for debates where the other person finally gets mad and resorts to childish name calling, people who repost the same article to 10 different communities all at once, and people who post graphic closeups of penises 👍

Question for all the block-happy lemmy users:
Do you notice an increase in average quality of the comments you see over time?
Or comment chains that make no sense cause half the commenters are blocked?
Or is it more like trying to dust off the Sahara?

Occasionally I’ll notice that a comment or two is missing because someone I’ve blocked is replying to a post, but it hasn’t really caused me any problems

Yes. Life is stressful enough without screaming in the void at “Internet debators” with the reading comprehension skills of a meatloaf. Blocking is better than getting hounded by their straw man arguments and trolling. If you don’t understand this, you’re part of the problem.

It depends on how you use Lemmy. Using an app, or the default/next version of the site? The comments might just be collapsed, or anything else all the way to just not even there whatsoever.

Oh no! Am I more of a Nermal than a Garfield? 😢

Tbf, most debates I get into are for the sake of not letting shitty opinions stay unchallenged. I kind of enjoy tearing down statements that might otherwise sway people into believing stupid things. I don’t try to persuade the person I’m arguing against, only the audience.

I also haven’t needed to block people because I’m a fiend for conflict. Trolls don’t have fun harassing me or something.

I think, generally, trolls piss off when they realize you actually know what you’re talking about and not just parroting popular opinion.

I feel like if I get blocked it’s an automatic win in the argument. If it’s easier for you to block someone than it is to explain why you are taking the side that you are there is a pretty good chance you’re on the wrong side.
