Anything that widens the necessary coalition shrinks the benefits of corrupt governance. You can only divide the spoils so much before it becomes pointless. To win in a wide coalition environment, policy becomes the main way of advancing one’s campaign, and it is precisely this outcome the opponents of voting reform seek to prevent.
It’s kind of amazing that the opposition argument cited in this article is literally “people are too stupid to pick between more than two choices”. Everybody can thank Sen. Theresa Gavarone (R-Bowling Green) for that little gem. The reality, of course, is that it would take control of the nomination process away from party elites.
