I think she means that they get their pets from rescues and shelters; versus breeders. Which btw, everyone should adopt from a rescue or shelter, and shun breeders. There should be more awareness raised about how many animals are put down because the shelters are over capacity. If you don’t feel you can commit to adopting, you can at least foster to help alleviate the over capacity. There are far too many people out there with animals they weren’t prepared for, and then try to surrender them.
If you adopt a pet from anywhere other than the street and pay for/participate in all all the things they need/bring them to vets whose livelihood includes participation in the broader animal domestication industry then yes you do.
pay for all the things they need/bring them to the vets
Ok so to follow your comment.
Go find an abandoned, stray animal in the street.
Refuse to take it to the vet because paying them means “participation in the domestication industry”, maybe the dog is ill and malnourished from the street, so you would prefer the dog dies slowly of illness
Cant buy appropriate dog food for the dog from a petshop, have to feed it human food. Which has to be very restricted vegan diet. Which will kill the dog as well.
Cant go buy a toy, or a bed, or anything even remotely dog friendly
Cant buy a collar and lead, to then walk the dog. I guess you would prefer just a rope or chain tied around their neck?
I’ll add to some of the other comments here by saying that I think the term “pet” doesn’t quite capture the relationship that vegans would describe as ethical. “Pet” implies a sort of status that is lower than the rest of the family. Closer to some inert object that you can enjoy and put away when you’re bored.
I prefer to think of them as members of my family. They are family, not pets, not property.
Having said that, my 3 boys are family. I worry almost obsessively about them and I feel extreme guilt when I have to leave the home (and them) for longer than my normal 6-8 hour maximum.
2 of the boys are cats, 1 is a dog. Morgan while being the goodest of boys does need us home so that he can go outside to do his business if he needs to.
Participating in…? Adopting animals and treating them like family when the alternative is that they may not have been adopted or loved?
I don’t buy animals, and I don’t treat them like property because it is wrong to do so. It’s more than just not using the term “pet”. It’s about treating other sentient beings with the consideration they deserve.
You don’t need to have “equal-footing” with anyone in order to treat them with the moral consideration they deserve or to love them. Thinking about it in terms of “equal-footing” is a weird thing to do.
I agree, I’m a vegan with out pets and I think that all entrapment of animals is wrong. That said, there is only so much focus in the world and I don’t think a world with farm and factory animals is one that will abolish pets. Personally I really am actually afraid and dislike dogs and have been mauled by one as a kid.
I think vegans are incredibly unfairly maligned for simply doing what they feel is ethical, but participation in adoption is still having pets.

We do not continue to put down money into a cruel industry.

True the proper term is companion animal.
I would die for my dogs. If it wasn’t for them, I wouldn’t have much else to care about.
They are my babies.

Privilege people often have that dangerous line of thinking.
Sorry what? So the innocents discarded by people and industries should just, what? get taken around the back and shot?
I’ll keep adopting greyhounds while pushing for the industry to be shutdown actually.
I’d like you to point out where I said anything like that.
