I always figured if get a rifle I’d want it to be a lever gun, they seem like a lot of fun and the space cowboy builds folks do are super cool!

I love lever action rifles & they do have a lot going for them in a some ways, but I will say if a lever action has to be your first rifle then your second rifle should be a intermediate cartridge detachable magazine semi-auto rifle. But a lever action in 357 mag is far from the worst beginner firearm. They are a lot of fun to shoot & people are a lot less intimidated by them.

Why do you reccomend eventually also getting a mag fed semi-auto rifle?

        Thanks for your thoughts :)

Basically it’s utility. Better practical accuracy & they lend themselves to working on shooting fundamentals. You don’t have to devote attention to working the action so you can focus on shooting accurately. You also don’t need to brake your hold of the rifle or sight picture. So you can focus on each individual shot & make fine adjustments between shots.

There is not much that can beat being able send thirty rounds downrange in 15 seconds. A semi-auto is a tool that does its job incredibly well.

A lever gun will just do its job pretty well, but will also be a lot of fun.

Do you mean for practical purposes, or just fun? I feel like I’d be very conscious that I’m burning through a lot of money 😅

Mostly I’m just interested in maybe someday going hunting once a year and sharing the meat with some folks since I think it’s more ethical than industrial agriculture, and I think there’s value in being more connected to the processes that feed you. If an animal is gonna die so that I can feed myself I feel like it’s healthy to be willing to confront that and appreciate the life that was sacrificed for my needs.

Going to the range every once in a while could be nice, but I’m usually not awake during the day due to a sleep disorder, so ranges aren’t open, and it’s not worth screwing up my sleep just to stand in a spot and shoot a piece of paper. And it seems like a good way to blow through a lot of money’s worth of ammo 😅

(I’m awake during the day right now and I just got to go out for a walk in the sunlight, I’m very pleased about it 😊😊😊)

I was reference self defense when talking about using a gun as a tool. As a hobby / range gun it is also fun, but arguing levels of fun is an excersize in futility.

You can get a semi auto that fires 22lr, and that is cheap as hell, but it’s not actually all that important, as compared to a semi auto for self defence.

As far as I know, BLM land is just about the only option available to everyone for night shooting.

Gotcha, that’s very fair. To me a lever gun seems more the route I’d go for fun. For self defense or practical purposes I can definitely see the sense in a semi automatic rifle.

And I wasn’t aware it was allowed anywhere, thank you very much for mentioning that!
