I was impressed by how light the RAM usage is on Linux Mint 21.2. I made a live usb and at cold boot was around 745MB which was only slightly higher than MX Linux. Very impressive considering how much more modern Cinnamon is and how much better it looks.

I was on Ubuntu which was using 1.6GB at idle and since my machine has fixed RAM of 4GB, I thought it best to switch to something lighter.

So I installed it and couldn’t be happier. It’s very snappy, looks incredible and works intuitively.

Great job Linux Mint team 💪

It’s great isn’t it? I don’t know how they did it. I think YT channels need to start including Mint in their “light distros” videos.

I have a 2009 iMac (Intel Core 2 Duo, 4mb RAM) sitting here that needed even lighter. I found Bodhi 6.0 booted its full graphical desktop (Moksha, a fork of Enlightenment) in 250Mb of RAM. Not a typo. I was so impressed at how zippy it was I installed it on an old HP Pavilion G6 laptop (Core i3, 4mb RAM, SSD) and it positively flies.

  • Yep! Mint is pretty fast, although I now mostly run Manjaro, Mint is still my favorite.

I wish our school wasn’t shedding bad light on Linux by trying to run it on ancient PCs with 256-512MiB RAM.
