So, I have a not so unique problem. I want to build a PC with decent power and good Linux support but local parts are hard to get and importing is a mess.

I’m looking for both amd CPU and GPU. At least 16 GB of ram and ideally as cheap as I can. Anyone have any advice to give me?
Also wtf is the motherboard thing. What works wi the what?
I’m aiming for something midrange-ish
So I have a couple of starter questions:
- What’s your region?
- What do you want your computer to do for you?
- What’s your current budget?
Ex: I want to play Elden Ring at max graphics settings, I need it able to run xyz program for work/school

Also I’d recommend using PcPartPicker to find comp parts, it’s what I typically start with when finding parts for my customersAlso, a thing that made this harder is that I’m a Linux user, ruling out all the nvidia stuff
Thankfully PC setup has become easier for Linux users as tools such as:
Itch.io/Steam - may have native launchers depending on Linux distro/Flatpak
Lutris/Heroics Launcher - can run Steam games and more
Wine/Bottles/Virt-Manager - can provide Windows app functionality
My only problem was whether or not a GPU would work, I have some experience with Linux and plan to go and as per advice I’ve been given
For:
- AMD gpus it_just_works.™️
- NVIDIA gpus I’ve heard they’re better nowadays however there are still some kinks such as minor issues with Wayland in addition to NVIDIA still trying to subtly push for proprietary drivers (userspace drivers are not in the best interest for the longterm FOSS ecosystem, NVIDIA can still say “psyche, gotcha!” and screw people :/)
Most modern GPUs on Linux should work, the brand I haven’t had the opportunity to personally test is Intel’s GPUs
I’m in Malta, As shown by the link I sent. My budget is flaxibke but ideally under 1000
I wanna get like maybe some ps3 emulation. Nothing too modern tho.
For Malta, the closest region for pricing looks like Italy so you’ll want to use the Itallian region for parts selection

Also, guessing graphics features like Raytracing isn’t a high priority but a bonus if possible?Raytracing and stuff is a bonus, might try move my mc server from the worlds worst provider to said PC tho

The motherboard is what’s used to connect all the parts together, plus it provides you with usb and video connection options on what’s called the “rear IO (input output) port”
So on the rear IO port it’ll contain connection options such as:
- USB-A (most common but is cursed in that there is only 1 correct way to connect🫠🎲)
- USB-C (the best port, no need to worry about how to connect your stuff now🌻)
- HDMI/DisplayPort (ports to connect to your monitor but is typically secondary backups or if your CPU has what’s callled an IGPU (Integrated Graphics Processing Unit/video renderer))
- Ethernet (direct internet connection for lowest latency and fastest speeds typically(wifi 7 is apparently good for upload/download but still has latency issues))
- Wifi antenna jacks/ports
- audio jacks
- PS2 (typically seen on older/cheaper boards for mice/peripherals
Higher end mobos will also have extra buttons on the rear IO to provide additional features such as BIOS/UEFI Flashback
Im worriedabout CPU and GPU slits
The CPU is inserted (gently) into the main CPU slot. Both will have on one of their corners (for alignment):
- an indented triangle on the motherboard CPU socket
- a gold triangle on the CPU
The GPU should be inserted into the topmost PCIE slot for optimal speeds (x16 means all 16 lanes are wired)
