Capitalism is a fucking shit show, but tankies legit confuse the hell out of me. I’d compare them to flat earthers where my first reaction is, “that’s sort of funny, but those people don’t actually exist, do they?”

I can tell you Hexbear is full of people enshrining China as the perfect country (they deny the Uyghur genocide but embrace its dictatorship as ideal) and calling everyone not from Hexbear a “shitlib” regardless of their political views.

One of the top posts on lemmy.ml got absolutely brigaded by Hexbear users, proving exactly why lemmy.world saw it fit to defederate from them. So much rampant stupidity in that thread. Hexbear users are not on this site to discuss anything in good faith, they are here to brigade and harass.

People who believe capitalism has only been responsible for death and misery. They view “The West” as evil as it has propogated capitalism.
Rather than support alternative systems they support countries which oppose “The West”, to them such countries must be inherently “good”.
The name comes from the Soviet Unions invasion of Hungry with tanks. Tankies were people who argued the invasion was for Hungarians own good and a good thing because the Soviet Union was communist.
In modern times tankie is used to describe people who support Russia and China. These people will argue any action those countries take is justified and deny any negative action.
For example a tankie will argue the Russian invasion of Ukraine is justified and for Ukraines own good. A tankie denies the Russian army is deliberately raping, murdering, castrating and generally torturing Ukrainians. When confronted with statements by the Kremlin/Putin admiting to those things a tankie will dismiss it as western propoganda.
The Lemmy developers are openly tankies.
