Sidechain compression, aka ducking. Basically, a compressor is set up to increase compression levels (squashes the volume down while also making it more consistent) on everything but the kick drum when the kick drum is sounding. It’s actually used subtly in a lot of genres to give some energy to the kick and duck the low frequencies in other tracks so that the low end in the mix doesn’t get muddled by the kick. A lot of EDM producers/artists do take it to comical extremes.
