How can a unilateral decision by one government about one app, present an opportunity to rethink the whole internet ?

It’s just wild to imagine this as some sort of catalyst or watershed moment…and is only the sort of thing an American could do.

It would be great to go back to the decentralised roots of the internet. Way too many services are centralised nowadays and that’s just a catastrophe waiting to happen.

The more interesting link thank a paywalled article is to the actual Project Liberty programme to try and buy tiktok: https://www.projectliberty.io/peoples-bid-for-tiktok/

I don’t know enough about this group andnplannto know whether the ownership structure would work and be independent. But the broad idea of collective ownership instead of a shareholder mentaloty oght bebgood for many companies. Too many are entirely focused on anything that will boost the share price rather than what is best for the company and customers.

No. Unless we strip billionaires of their empires, and I don’t think the NYT New Yorker would advocate that.
