Was visiting a wisconsin town this weekend and observed this nightmare-ish bike lane configuration… the road’s speed limit is 25mph, but has a massive 500’ acceleration lane. Gonna guess how many people actually obey the speed limit here?
The dashed lines denoting merging across the bike lane are a whopping 482 feet long!
Why is a four lane road 25 mph?
Gotta give more lanes to assholes who are going to do 45
The four lane road continues as the “main st” of the city. (About 1/4 mile behind this pic).
The main st is a busy pedestrian corridor filled with tourists & cheesy family attractions.

I wonder if they made the lane long to allow for more merging options with the bike lane. I wouldn’t want to be in that bike lane, but it may be safer with a longer lane ( at least in theory).
It’s possible. However, all that is lost if drivers are doing more than double the speed limit.
I’m shocked the speed limit is only 25mph. That would be a 40+mph road in my area.
There are 60mph roads with less, its not like car infrastructures has any real thought behind it.
R.I.P. any bike commuter who dares to use that lane during rush hour
Is it legal to use the main road lane when a bike lane is available?
In most jurisdictions, yes. Bikes can typically ride anywhere except motorways.
My office is off a road like this except no bike lanes. It’s a mile and a half of commercial 4 lane road followed by 2 lane residential and the speed limit is 25 on the whole thing. Everyone goes 40+ in the commercial section which at least has a grass median and sidewalks on both sides. People bike on the sidewalks even though its against city ordinances because they like to stay alive. The residential section has a stop sign every 500 feet.
Almost as bad as this nightmare in my town. Another view in this article about the world’s worst bike lanes. Nothing has been done about it in years AFAIK.
Ah. The dells. That whole place is a shit show.
Don’t worry, everyone made a pinky promise not to speed, especially when no one is looking 😉
