Interestingly enough, pinyin alphabet combined with character prediction allows typing at around 242 words a minute. This is a fun watch on how Chinese input methods evolved. There are also some interesting benefits to character based systems.

That said, I do think alphabets have the benefit of flexibility and one advantage of an alphabet is that it’s possible to guess how the word is pronounced based on the letters. With a characters based system you either know the character or you don’t.

There are also keyboards which let you type much faster like the Charachorder by eliminating the need to type characters in the correct order. It will just put the word together for you when you press buttons.

Gonna be interesting when we start seeing machine learning assisted input becoming standard. I think a lot can be done with predictive test where you can minimize typing significantly.

    >All bureaucracies produce mountains of paperwork, and Mao Zedong’s sprawling authoritarian regime in China was certainly no exception.
