Was planning on adding DFHack for my second fortress. I like to have one play through of a game before adding mods. I find it helps me understand things a bit better :)
DFHack is less a mod and more a huge collection of quality of life features (and cheat codes). I didn’t use it for years and just started to with the Steam release. I wish I had used it from the beginning, just for things like autobutcher, autotailor, and autodump.
Make sure to turn off cooking of plump helmets. If they are cooked instead of brewed, they won’t leave a “seed” and you will run out.
