I’m reminded of how, in the early days of colonialism, it was believed that corn was incredibly bad for you and that it would turn you into a savage, and the only thing that broke people of this belief was enough of them being subjected to tough winters and being forced to eat it until their cognitive dissonance forced them to retroactively decide that they never believed in that silly superstition anyway.

Corn needs to be chemically processed to be nutritional. Indigenous cultures learned this. People got really painfully sick on unprocessed corn.
