Long ago I had a fort that was located near several large Goblin establishments. The yearly raids were fierce, eventually bringing 80-90 raiders.
I had a large steel-clad military with a Hammerer as the Champion. During one particularly gruesome raid, one of the Champion’s feet was severed. After his recovery he was relegated to leading the new recruit training squad in order to pass on his martial knowledge.
During the raids I would still station the training squad amongst the vets, and the old Champ would hobble in with his old Warhammer still slung on his back, shield in one hand and crutch in the other. And he was not afraid. He waded in with the best of my most capable dwarves, thwacking enemies with both crutch and shield.
As luck would have it, one day a possessed dwarf produced an artifact crutch made of nickel and decorated with all sorts of other fine materials. Of course this crutch was immediately claimed by the Champ who wielded it in battle more fiercely than ever.
His crowning achievement came when the fort was attacked by a great forgotten beast. I sent the entire military in to kill it, and wouldn’t you know the Champ was the first one there. I don’t know what was delaying all the other dwarves, but the Champ solo’d the beast in a minutes-long battle, eventually crushing the beast’s head with his artifact crutch.
