A few useful #foss software and services:
@fedora - best #linux distro if you want stability and new software at the same time
@keepassxc - best offline password manager
@librewolf - best browser for #privacy and usability. It is what Firefox should be.
@libreoffice - best FOSS office suite with the most functionality
@protonmail - most trustworthy email service with E2E and Zero-knowledge encryption
@protonvpn - best choice for freemium #vpn service
@fosserytech @fedora @keepassxc @librewolf @libreoffice @protonmail @protonvpn wasnt there a whole thing with proton and the CIA compromising it via the CDN for a while?
@nihilistic_capybara @fedora @keepassxc @librewolf @libreoffice @protonmail @protonvpn I just heard about a case when they handed over a criminal’s data to the Swiss government (but they state that in their privacy policy that they must obey the law)
@fosserytech @fedora @keepassxc @librewolf @libreoffice @protonmail @protonvpn but if it really.is end to end encrypted and zero knowledge them shouldn’t they not be able to even decrypt the data?
@nihilistic_capybara @fedora @keepassxc @librewolf @libreoffice @protonmail @protonvpn I think each email and cloud providers can do that. When you use any of those you have to trust them with your data. If you’re concerned about that, the only solution is self-hosting. Proton Mail is still the best option for those who can’t self-host.
@fosserytech @nihilistic_capybara @fedora @keepassxc @librewolf @libreoffice @protonmail @protonvpn There isn’t rly any good way to self-host email, especially when you also want to send. Receive sure, there are options, but sending emails from self-hosted server is almost undoable without all of your emails ending up in spam.
Protonmail is okay as an alternative to gmail and the likes for personal use-case. Not a good service for journalistic and activistic use though
@altair222 @fosserytech can you give an example of what would suffice?
for?
@altair222 you said Protonmail was nice but not good enough for journalistic or activistic needs. I’m curious what would be? What services, I mean.
Ah, I’m not sure for activistic or journalistic needs, sorry!
@altair222 @fosserytech for activist and journalistic case (hoping you have Android instead of iOS) would be Signal, or Molly which is hardened Signal Fork, Session, or Briar.
Not too sure about PC.
Session has alt-right affiliations so i stay away from it. Can suggest SimpleX due to its infrastructure system but it is still a very young project
@altair222 @AnonymousEntity Hi, Could you elaborate on “Session has alt-right affiliations”? I use it with my friends and would like to know more about this.
I’m unable to find the evidence i once held on the matter. I’m going to continue trying to find it.
@altair222 My main app to use is Molly.
If I had an Edward Snowden threat model, then I would use Session regardless of politics. It’s the best way to ensure that they don’t know who’s talking to who and the contents of the messages.
I despise how people make platforms and tools politicized. They were never meant to be. I use different apps with supposed affiliations but as long as I don’t engage with those people, that’s one more normal person on the platform keeping the balance.
The direction a communication service takes entirely depends on the political affiliations of their developers. Everything is political in nature, politics is merely the study of social systemic structures that humans develop.
@AnonymousEntity @altair222 so say you are a lefty, green or democrat, people should just boycott your work or stop employing you, due to that? I don’t condone anything here, but that is absolutely absurd! 🤦🤡
@chiefbongo @altair222 for me, privacy and anonymity is what it is. I’ll use whatever’s available to obtain it. Using those services won’t benefit them since it’s free and open source.
@AnonymousEntity @altair222 don’t get me wrong - I am a-political. This cancel culture is just becoming a thoughtless norm and people should start speaking up about it. Every human being has a right to put food on the table, no matter what. Who cares if someone is interested in wild sex parties or political affiliations, a certain religion or whatever other fancy. Nobody has a right to judge or condemn, as long as it does not affect someones professionalism at work.
a-political person who has political opinions.
@fosserytech @protonmail @protonvpn @libreoffice @librewolf @keepassxc @fedora
#Protonmail does not #encrypt the subject line like #Tutanota. other than that, it’s a better solution than many free or non encrypted #email providers.
I find #openSUSE a very stable and a rock solid #linux #distro. To me, it’s a battle tested heavy duty prosumer commercial grade distro. I’m a gui dependent user, so openSUSE is quite accommodating for those who don’t know CLI commands.
#Tumbleweed is also a rolling release with bleeding edge tech. Yet, it’s very stable, very solid. very fast, very flexible. very…😃
#Librewolf is a great browser. However, one thing I would like to see is, its option to disable 3rd party cookies. there is no native #browser way of disabling 3rd party #cookies aside from installing #ublock origin or #umatrix extension.
#SPN (Safing Private Network) a vpn service that can provide simultaneous multiple identities per app and onion routing paths, safing.io. The creators of the free foss #portmaster #firewall for #windows and linux.
Interesting site for privacy conscious apps. ‘https://switching.software’
switching.software@mikesixgolf @protonmail @protonvpn @libreoffice @fosserytech @keepassxc @fedora @librewolf > a **vpn** service
It’s actually a **s**pn service lol.
@expertmanofficial @protonmail @protonvpn @libreoffice @librewolf @fosserytech @keepassxc @fedora
I meant to say vpn-like service. thx for highlighting that. cheers.
