the next-generation Switch might still be able to hold its own in terms of graphics performance with Sony’s PlayStation 5 and Microsoft’s Xbox Series X|S in some optimized titles.

I’ll believe that when I see it.

If they’re going for “graphical performance”, whatever that means, the could probably use DLSS 3 to upscale a muddy 360p internal resolution image. It’ll be messy and gross, but fast.

Exactly. Nintendo gave up on competing with graphical fidelity after the Wii U.

The switch at launch was already 3 year old SOC and it broke all sales records

Bare minimum effort will be applied for the new model as well

I think you mean ‘after the GameCube’.

And even then, the GC only sat as a middle-ground between the original Xbox and the PS2. Nintendo hasn’t explicitly tried to make a graphical powerhouse since the N64.

And only middle because Xbox was balls to the wall overpowered compared to the others.

I mean you may be right…but when I think of the Wii U, it was the last time we got AAA ports of games like Ninja Gaiden, Assassins Creed and yeah…even Call of Duty. Since the switch, because of the underpowered specs, not many AAA games have had competent ports (looking at you mortal Kombat 1 switch port) and most AAA quality is now only first party from Nintendo

Which is a good thing, because 99.99% of AAA games have been total shit for more than a decade.

I mean…it helps that the Switch launched out of cycle with Xbox and PlayStation, and also was $100+ cheaper than the others. Not to mention the advantage of it being portable. Which means someone in the household can play it without eating up a screen, or it can be brought on travel. Mine is indispensable on work trips. It also supports a variety of excellent local multiplayer games - which at least in my house, gets a shit load of use. Smash, Mariokart, Mario party, etc. are on constant rotation.

The PS5 digital is $400. The Xbox series X is $500. The Xbox series S which arguably does something similar to the switch, dropping the insistence on the highest graphical quality, is the only one in either this generation or the previous which compares in price, at $300. (Granted this is actually cheaper than the OLED Switch model, which is at $350).

I desperately wish Nintendo would release their IP on PC, but it’ll be a cold day in hell before that happens.

After the WiiU? Nah man, the Wii was already way behind the rest and from then on out they stayed a generation worth of graphical development behind.

I honestly don’t mind that at all but I am also not the target audience for the latest and greatest in graphics. I love a great indie roguelike just as much as “complete editions” of triple A games from a couple of years ago.

Maybe with hyper-aggressive use of DLSS they can get most of the way there.

It’s not unheard of for nintendo to release a brand new earthbound game but that doesn’t mean a leak around the idea is true. 99% of nitnendo leaks are made up by someone on Twitter.

I mean they used to do this kind of stuff with the ATI chips from (now AMD) in the past, right? I vaguely remember seeing an ATI sticker on my GameCube or Wii

Maybe it will be similar to the ATI branding on the Wii. Just a little grey logo in the corner.

It’s either dead or there’s no need to update it because there isn’t real competition in that space. I’m just wondering what they are going to do with this new mobile chip platform once the switch 2 is released. I doubt they only ever use it in the switch 2. I’m guessing they would want to release it (or a version of it) in some other hardware.

I mean that could be… But it could sell not like there is a lot of other options. Most are shit except the Google TV Chromecast thingy and I guess the Xiaomi one. Roku maybe? Not sur show it is right now but in any case it’s not that international here for example it’s not a thing but Shield is available If they had some extra that made it worth it like proper hard drive support or who knows it could sell.
