Migraine and Bipolar Disorder

Bipolar disorder is a mental health condition that is characterized by drastic mood and behavior changes ranging from depression to hypomania and mania. Migraine and bipolar disorder seem to have a bidirectional relationship. It appears many factors could play a role in the relationship between these two conditions such as genetics, white matter hyperintensities, inflammatory markers and neurotransmitters.

There seems to be a bidirectional relationship between migraine and bipolar disorder. Patients suffering from migraine with aura are three times more likely to suffer from bipolar disorder than the general population. Conversely, about one-third of patients with bipolar disorder have migraine.
