I’m seeing if there’s any shows I neeed to wrap up before the price increase. Definitely cancelling. Shame because it looks like a lot of good new content is coming out November and January.

    Might have to pirate some.

I’ve never had a cable TV package and steering subscription into being cable TV’s replacement isn’t going to change that.

Just turn on subscription for couple of months every year to catch up on new shows. With plenty of free codes this would not cost you a dime.

As an ADHD person I view subscriptions as either a forever thing or a never thing, because it’s guaranteed I’ll forget and pay longer. Just ask my Optimus prime or Matthew McConaughey bed time stories from Calm I absolutely never use, but got a free year from work which auto renewed (thankfully about to expire and cancelled).

I also have a 16tb file server kind of not doing much because HP were giving these things away when they split with HPE, so it’s not like file storage or the resources to run an endpoint are a problem.

I bought AppleOne 2 years ago, and it saved me money over individual prices. Now it’s saving me more money because I could cancel my SimpleLogin subscription and use Hide My Email. I cancelled my Google Drive subscription and just use iCloud Drive.

The bundled features are pretty nice.

Canceled mine too. I’ll sign up once every six months and binge watch what’s there lol. 😝 I got Netflix free for a year with Verizon. Will do the same there.

I still get it free from T-mobile. Otherwise, I’d do some months on, some off

I’ve never thought Apple TV+ was worth the money - both for the quantity and the enjoyment of its content. While it can arguably claim to have high quality content, it doesn’t appeal to a wide audience. For me most of it is boring and tedious to sit through, and not enjoyable at all. Yet on Netflix I can watch a wealth of content from many different countries that may not be the best quality wise, but stands out in variety and entertainment value, and caters for all demographics.

I’ll subscribe once a year for a month. Binge everything I missed. Cancel. Rinse and repeat.

Same here. Last time I watched all seasons of Ted Lasso, Silo and Severance. And the first season of The morning show (I will watch the remaining seasons next year :-))

Does it allow you to browse the shows if not subscribed? Can’t do that with Netflix, HBO and Disney+. But can for Amazon.

Yes in India Apple allows to browse and also let you watch trailer without subscribing. Same with Disney+ and Amazon.

That’s the only way I can justify with streaming services, the ala carte way. Finished The Last of Us on Now? CANCELED. Finished Narcos on Netflix? CANCELED. Oh, we’re done with Handmaid’s Tale and felt it was mediocre? CANCELED. Once a new season comes out from the shows we watch, we resubscribe for a month.

We do that with YTTV for football season and special events like World Cup and the Olympics. So this year is going to be expensive with the summer Olympics happening…

I hope these streaming services don’t have a contract to keep it for a year…god, I’d quit using all of them if that happened.

Just got the email and canceled immediately. One of the easiest decisions I’ve ever made in my life.

$3/mo isn’t going to break the bank but I’ve been trying to cut my streaming costs anyhow and Apple made this easy. Unlike their competitors, they’re going to be adding content for at least a year a two before they start removing any.

I’ll check back in a year from now, having saved $84 (based on the old subscription cost) and probably be able to catch up with anything I missed in a month or two.

Considering they do not have a real back catalogue of content to offer up or are paying licenses to have other content. $9.99 US I take it? (Which will be more in other countries like AU when/if it happens) will make it not worth it.

    That is the key factor.

But they are doing it because everyone else is doing it. 1 - 2 hike prices people complain, drop, makes the news but after that dust settles the other similar services see the market and rivals and follow the course.

The other thing to understand now with the streaming services:

    - Where their model is movie/show licensing - They do that, get what they can, pay so that passes over to customers
    - Producing own shows
    - Producing own movies

    The next steps are:

    - Online / streaming games:
Netflix is dabbing it’s feet in this water and seeing what works and does not work with its mobile games, the interactive shows etc. I do not see this developing much for some time.

    - Sport streaming / Live streaming:

With the old guard holding rights to sports big money is needed in developing what a streaming service needs to do to make these work and obtain those licenses.
Apple for example is rumoured to have talks with F1 and obtaining that. F1 itself was looking to do it’s own but they may have found it too much. People have told Netflix this is what they should work on

Disney is doing things like the NFL and the kids versions etc.

Amazon Prime has a strange thing for live sports, Again they are clearly testing the waters.

Plex has increasing home grown sports stuff popping into it’s service.

Local club sports in countries like New Zealand for Rugby as an example are increasingly streaming to Youtube.

ATV+ has a lot of quality content, not sure I would pay for it as a standalone streaming platform, but I have it through my Apple One package, as I´m an Apple Music guy (mostly for the dolby atmos content). And for $20 that´s a good deal for me for music, icloud storage, atv+ and arcade. Arcade actually has alot of decent titles.

I have apple One Premier and even that is getting increased. It’s literally almost $40, and you would think at that price you’d get more then just 2TB of shared family storage but no, I have to pay an additional $10 for an extra TWO terabytes to support my iCloud family of 6… almost $50! Ridiculous
