Apologies for the paywall, but I thought this was worth sharing anyway. Really excellent profile of McDaniel.

He is the best thing that has happened to the Dolphins since Dan Marino. Plus now fee agents are going to look at how he treats players and the culture and want to go there. Just don’t eff it up Stephen Ross by being impatient if a superbowl doesn’t happen immediately.

Side note: anyone remember the Saturday morning show called ReBoot?

    Like super early computer graphics.

    Good stuff.

That was an amazing read, thank you! Two very different thoughts…

This was not the story I thought it would be based on the headline. Incredible read. Kudos to the McDaniel family for being vulnerable and open. Most people would not discuss struggles to conceive so openly. Love how seriously they take both football and family. Can’t imagine growing up without a Dad and learning how that drives him is good stuff. I feel like Millennials are blossoming as we age.

All that said…isn’t it time to burn the tired Flores sucked as Dolphins coach tale? I get it, he wasn’t good there. But this story spends 85% of the word count talking about growth and change, but then doesn’t allow Flores any agency to grow and change. He’s doing great in Minnesota. Maybe he’s coordinator material and not HC, I dunno. But can’t Miami’s success be enjoyed without tearing the last coach apart continuously?? I feel it takes away from McDaniel’s success and feels kinda backstabby at the same time.

    Dolphins fans may feel differently.

I think that Flores has the goods to be a solid head coach in this league IF he can take this opportunity to grow and learn from his mistakes. If he can spend a few years as a coordinator and actually and honestly reflect on his time in Miami, I think his philosophies will improve and he’ll make some team a very good HC. But if he doesn’t, then he’ll just continue to be an asshole and maybe just be a good DC. For my part, I’m very happy that we moved on and got McDaniel.

He had a .278 win % vs playoff teams, had 4.5 offensive coordinators in three years, had Jim Caldwell bail on him after working with him for literally three days and attempted to sabotage Tua’s career because he was too fucking incompetent/impatient/stupid to attempt to build an offense around his highly drafted Quarterback.

Isn’t it time we stopped pretending he wasn’t a dogshit coach? He might be a good coordinator but he was an objectively awful coach and leader of men in Miami.

But last year, when he suffered a gruesome concussion and crumbled to the turf, it wasn’t Flores or Nick Saban or his dad Tagovailoa called out for. Medical and team personnel had no doubt whom he wanted because he kept muttering the same thing.

    “Where’s Mike?” he said.

What a great bit that shows Tua’s trust in McDaniel.

One of the lessons in this article is to see a doctor when you are experiencing unusual pain. Makes no sense to suffer through it.
