I thought it was a pretty good critique by South Park but I still liked the first 5-6 seasons of Family Guy back in the day, random joke structure and all. It was a funny show.
It just never really innovated much on that formulas and went on for way too long. I don’t understand why it wasn’t cancelled a long time ago.
Yeah the first three seasons of Family Guy hold a special place in my heart and life. I used to stay up late to watch them on Adult Swim back in like 2002-2003. Those initial seasons (before they were cancelled and brought back for a 4th season) actually told stories and the characters weren’t one note vessels for jokes. The show has fallen so far, everyone is so mean spirited and there’s no characterization, Lois is the best example of this. She actually used to love her kids and act like a mother, now she’s just as mean as Peter is to Chris and Meg and basically hates her children.
South Park definitely called out the show on its awful writing and it was so glorious to see it when it first happened.

It was canceled. Twice. It keeps coming back like the undead.
When was the second time? I thought it was just after season 1.

It really is a show that continued to rest on its laurels.m, rather than innovating.
Even Seth doesn’t understand why it’s still running. He wants it to end. Hell his only contribution to the show for the last decade is voices
The first 5 seasons of Family Guy are full of bust out laughing jokes. It feels like hating to hate to deny it.
