I had bought an AppleTV years ago and returned it after realizing the device was super walled in. Has that changed? Can you install apps like Plex and Kodi?
I’ve had Plex installed on my Apple TV for years. There’s an official Plex app in the App Store.
You can’t play PS3 games on it. There’s no app to iron your clothes. I’ve never once had it successfully pay my mortgage, via an app of even just asking nicely (Not once). It doesn’t have many wheels, so no wheel barrow apps.
Hope that helps.
If not, other than the 2 apps you mention, let us know what else you want to do with it.
… And I’ve not found a good marriage counsellor app yet. So yes, quote a lot of limitations.
I was a faithful user of Kodi since it was named XBMC an ran on the first version of XBOX game console, after that I have it on a Celeron 4 core MiniPC, then I move my library to Kodi and used it form many years, then I found InFuse and after that I got rid of all my MiniPC’s and got several Apple TV’s 4K. Today those are my streaming devices in my household. For me the best combination is inFuse and Apple TV 4K to manage home digital media libraries.
For me I started with XBMC running on a raspberry pi. With Apple TV I started with Plex and now it’s all streaming apps. Didn’t know XBMC is now called Kodi.
If I’m not wrong, it was a fork of XBMC or something. I stop using it because it was not available on ATV natively. If you want to install it you have to jailbreak the device and that a lot of problems.
I’ve change to InFuse because it is in the ATV Store. It cost 9 bucks a year, but it totally worth it.
I like Apple specifically because it’s walled in. I feel safe and secure.
Just about anytime I’ve had major computer issues. It’s when I downloaded some noncompliance software because I was trying to do some shady shit.
You can install Plex officially yes, but not Kodi.
There’s a way to install Kodi, but quite cumbersome.
KodiTVBox.tv has a pretty easy way to do it. If you get it through them they’ll send a link with instructions on setting it up and give you a version that works with Apple TV and other iOS devices. It’s actually pretty easy and doesn’t cost that much. They also have a trial that lasts a few days so you can set it up and see how it works.
You can install MrMc which is a variant of Kodi & available for Apple TV.
