They had an episode where they sort of played around with him being an old part of the show that’s not really relevant.

    Naughty ninjas.

      Agreed 100%.

Barbrady was just a stupid oaf from the era before South Park’s clever social commentary.

Yates, is actually a pretty clever caricature of a cop and tends to behave and think a lot more like they actually do IRL.

They fully sold me on Yates on the episode where he goes undercover for sex stings.

Well, Barbrady was fired from the police department then ended up working for the feds against ads.

So I assume he’s still a government agent.

That’s my thinking. Maybe an independent consultant that the feds send a 1099 to or something. Just so long as his dog can get the meds she needs, that’s all that matters.

I do think the new cop is funnier and just the new police station in general. But I’m one of those people that tends to not love the first three seasons the way other people do. I appreciate it, and obviously the nostalgia involved… But I think the show became a lot funnier starting around season 4 or 5 .

Matt and tray don’t really like the first three seasons either

Didn’t he give up the badge and gun, cuz he didn’t wanna shoot anymore kids…

He came back for a special mission against ads, but I thought he was retired with his dog now…

He’s a sheriff, so he doesn’t work for the SPPD. As someone stated, he got fired, but sheriffs in Colorado are elected and are therefore unfireable. South Park proper is generally purple leaning blue, but Park county as a whole is generally red. He’s likely still a Park County official, especially if he’s a Garrison supporter. Another comment points out he’s still working for the feds, so he might be a DoJ asset or something similar. Regardless, he has probably been introduced to high levels of power in Washington, which would likely augment his ability to generate campaign contributions and bolster his capacity to carry the votes necessary for his position.

My theory was always that he went into a dark place after he learnt to read and read about the world and the people in it and will one day return, innocence lost, full of hate and more powerful than ever.

It’s easy to forget how old South Park is, like this show started when Clinton was in office. I think when Matt and Trey started the show they didn’t need much from a police officer character, just someone who shows up says a few goofy lines and is done.

Nowadays I think the way policing is done is a more prevalent issue in our society (or at least there’s more disagreement over how it should be done). I think Matt and Trey just needed a character who they can do more with and who fits the needs of today better. Like how they replaced Victoria with PC Principal, or even just the way Randy Marsh’s character has developed the last few years.
