My ex boyfriend recently passed away due to a OD of fentanyl it’s now labeled a homicide due to the circumstances… the detectives are trying to figure out how to unlock his phone but we haven’t had the best of luck we’re trying to find any evidence off his text messages to see who he last seen or talked to because that’s most likely the person who gave it to him… I’m in Texas and his parents are in Florida I’m trying to help them the best I can but explaining technology to older people seems harder then I thought! any advice on how to go about unlocking it? iPhone is super difficult when you don’t have the passcode it’s like impossible to get in! Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Plug it into power and put it somewhere it has WiFi. Hope it does an iCloud backup. Subpoena Apple to get access to the account and restore the backup to another phone.

I’ve heard if you take the phone to an apple store with proof of his death they can unlock it for you. I never tried but it’s worth a shot.

I think with a warrant cops can get info from iCloud if the phone was backed up, but AFAIK, the phone itself can’t be cracked without Secret Service-level activity which isn’t going to happen for a minor situation.

Definitely going to try that route I already let her know but I know they won’t go to the ends of the earth to find out either… hopefully they get something back.
