Hi, found a good deal on 2015 15"mac pro and I’m thinking about picking it up since I want finally try macos as my daily driver. But one thing is important to me, how often does fan kicks in and how loud is it?

Basically, can you browse on the web without fans spinning very loud?

Thanks!

If you paid over 100 dollars for it that’s probably too much. however if it was rarely or not used often than it could be okay.

I have mine from 2015 and the fan runs basically constantly and needs to stay plugged in but i hardcore used it for almost since the day i bought it.

Just be aware that you can’t update it anymore so there are going to be some challenges going forward with support from apps and other things…web browsing should be fine though.

If it’s a great deal, should be fine, however anything with porcessing might be a challenge

I’ve had pretty much the same experience and agree with almost all of the points in your take. I have one that I got around launch in 2015, and I would say it was a fantastic machine up until a couple years ago.

I still use mine for web browsing, light gaming on Windows through bootcamp, and practicing development work. For those things it’s fine, but I wouldn’t get one for intense workflows. Like you said - the fans can get really loud, the machine gets pretty hot, and the battery doesn’t last very long. I’ve also had weird issues with Bluetooth syncing and the device not waking up properly from sleep mode.

Personally I’d probably be willing to spend a little more than $100, but definitely no more than $200. It’s a fun machine to tinker with thanks to its flexibility (compared to other MacBooks), but IMO it’s not a great daily driver these days. The M1 MacBooks and beyond will probably be a much more enjoyable experience.

I recently picked up a 15 inch 2015. Temperatures sit around 60°C (noting it is almost summer here), fans are around 2000rpm. They are not audible over the ambient noise in the room. When the fans do spin up to max they are noticable. They’re comparable to the fans on the 2018 and 2019 pros.

1080p video playback (youtube) does not induce audible fan noise, nor does basic web browsing. Geekbench and cinebench do get the laptop cooking though (temperatures hover around 96°C)
