these sort of over-cautious moves are always made by people who spend their day staring at a spreadsheet and think that a record is just math, clean precise numbers. no, we don’t have any stats to measure if players playing for a perfect season play that much harder, that’s just noise and hype, that’s obviously extraneous to the Xs and Os, so we can just ignore that.

As a Phillies fan I can’t support this mentality.
Baseball teams are throwing fits at having first round byes and if you’re a champion athlete, you take the rest day and still put in the work. So yeah maybe if the starters were rested for the playoffs and they didn’t continue to work, and partied and relaxed and assumed it was a lock, then yeah maybe. But the Atlanta Braves just turned in a 100+ win season and lost to the Phillies who the Braves owned all regular season long.
They are blaming it on the first round bye. Tough shit man, if your coaches and managers didn’t have a plan to keep you loose and moving, and game ready, that’s on you. It ain’t like the rules changed, you knew all of this was possible going into the season. Best be prepared next time.

Totally random, but I always blamed the Pro Bowl switch for that 2009 Super Bowl loss.
That was the first year the NFL switched the Pro Bowl from the week after the SB, to the week before. And for that first year, players from the SB winning team still had to appear in Hawaii for media and stuff. (which isn’t the case anymore, that was the ONLY year).
We had players in the Pro Bowl (Peyton, the most obvious) so I felt like that was a distraction for them. If you give Peyton extra time to prepare for the Saints instead of doing pointless Pro Bowl media, I think we beat the Saints.
In all likelihood, it probably had negligible effects on the outcome (as the Saints had players in Hawaii too), but I ALWAYS think about how things could have been different without this.

We’d have won if Freeney hadn’t been injured in the AFCCG. And that had nothing to do with resting starters.

Might we have fared better not resting starters? Possibly.
Might we have lost a key player to injury, perhaps even Manning? Possibly.
Did that week of not playing ACTUALLY make us worse? Impossible to know, but there’s no statistical basis to claim that resting starters leads to lower success.
