I still haven’t figured out how to get other instances to show up in my feed? The instructions I’ve found say to search for it, as you have listed them in your comment but when I hit search, it never finds them.
The search behaviour is really odd. Basically, if a given community has never been searched for from your instance before it needs extra time to pull the data. So search will show no results, sometimes for a good 15-20 seconds, and then suddenly update to have a result!
Make sure as well when you’re doing your search, you include the ! at the start and you’re searching “all” not “communities” from the dropdown.
You can also try these direct links Gamedev, Godot but if your instance hasn’t yet pulled them for the first time those links will 404.
That worked! Took a few tries cuz it seems like my instance isn’t happy at the moment, guessing increased traffic is the cause, but I got there in the end! Thanks for the explanation!
Question, blahaj.zone don’t seem to allow me to use my account from lemmy.world, meaning nothing I subscribe to there will appear in my subscribed feed. Is there a way around this, or is this instance basically blocked off for me if I want everything together?
You can subscribe to communities elsewhere, but you need to access them through your home instance first. There are usually instructions in the sidebar telling you the address to put into your home instance’s search to find them.
However in this case since both you and I are both on lemmy.world, and I’m subbed to both of these, our instance already knows about them. Which means you don’t need to do the search and can just go straight there: Gamedev, Godot
Sorry if that’s super confusing, it’ll make sense in no time I promise :D
So let’s take https://lemmy.blahaj.zone/c/gamedev as an example, I want to access it via my home instance, which is lemmy.world (Tell me if there’s a better one I should be using, lol) I can search for “gamedev” in communities and set it to all and that community shows up, but there’s no option to subscribe, or anything. So, how do I access them on my own instance in this case?
Hmm, you’re doing it right, when you click through from the community search there should be a big subscribe button in the sidebar. If not, I’m honestly not sure why that would be!
Figured it out! You click on the result, and then you’ll be taken to the community, but opened in the same instance. From there, you can hit subscribe!
Yep! Someone actually made a bookmarklet yesterday so if you find yourself accidentally having opened a remote community link you can hit the bookmark to be taken back to the lemmy.world version…hang on…
!gamedev@lemmy.blahaj.zone is pretty active and has a pinned thread with tons of related communities too. !godot@programming.dev is new but nice.

No worries! Yeah I do think we’re seeing a rapid uptick in bugs and general slowness with all the new people, but we’ll get through it 😄

Hey, I’m guessing you’re new today :)

javascript:(function() {const myInst="lemmy.world";let currUrl=window.location.toString().split("/");let currInst=currUrl[2];currUrl[2]=myInst;let newUrl=currUrl.join("/")+"@"+currInst;window.location=newUrl;})()
Just drag that code up to your bookmarks bar, it really helps take a lot of the jank out of things.
