I’m trying to find some wood to use, but am not sure what to look for. I’m mainly interested in building simple stools. I live in south Alabama and the nearest lumber yard is 3 hours away.

I asked a local landscaper where he dumps his yard waste and then I went there and asked for green wood. I make spoons with it, so I went back next time and gave the nice lady there a spoon I made. Then I got more green birch wood

What kind of tool do you have? I’ve salvaged a lot of nice wood from the thrift store near my house, they toss a lot of stuff and a good bit of it is solid wood. Check Craigslist free, if you have a lathe, some branches make great legs

Even 3 hours to the nearest home improvement store? The wood can be hit or miss there depending on the chain.

Also if you’re in a more rural area farmers sometimes sell wood. I’ve seen them on Facebook’s or through connections I’ve made.

I get woodturning logs from posts on Craigslist or FB Marketplace. Your city might also have a yard waste dump that you could rummage through. Mine welcomes people taking logs off their hands, although the pile is 90% dead Ash 😟
