I really enjoyed this. The style is very much “del toro” and the stop motion animations were excellent. One of the best stop motion animated movies I’ve seen.
What are your thoughts on this movie if you’ve seen it?
What is your favorite stop motion animated movie?
I thought it was well-made and a very sweet story about fathers and sons.
The historical setting was interesting, but I don’t think it added enough to the story to justify how big a part the WW2 parts played. You have a story about someone who wants to be a real person, and it’s set in a time where people are being murdered en-masse because they’re not “real people”. However, the fascism subplot just ends when the kid can’t make his militaristic father happy.
That’s my only real complaint though. The animation was gorgeous.
As for my favorite stop motion movie: Probably “Isle of Dogs”
You have a very good point about the setting. Now that you mention it it seemed as if the fascist state thing only affected the story when it was convenient rather than it being this overarching thing throughout the story. However I wouldnt say if affected my enjoyment of the movie.
Isle of Dogs is very good too.
