The most prominent of these protocols is ActivityPub. https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/6/68/A_view_into_the_Fediverse.png/800px-A_view_into_the_Fediverse.png on kbin it looks like they call “subreddits” magazines, and the links use /m/ on Lemmy they are called communities, and the links use /c/ so in the case of that link, it is showing federated posts to users on that kbin instance that originate from this Lemmy instance.
