It's not because they don't take the pandemic seriously. In fact, unvaccinated parents in Detroit are least likely to say it's safe to resume normal, pre-pandemic activities: even basic ones like grocery shopping or walking outside.

“White parents…are actually the strongest opponents and most sort of stuck in the mud about, ‘I am not going to get vaccinated,’” Lydia Wileden says. “We see a lot more likelihood of people changing their mind among residents of color, than we do among those white holdouts.” Researchers saw similar opposition in a recent survey on contact tracing in Detroit.
