1 year agoBecause playing something doesn’t mean you’re good at coaching it. The vast majority of anyone in the coaching side of things never makes the NFL level, they get to CFB, don’t get drafted and start over.
I’ve said it before, but Staley only got that job because he inherited a Wade Phillips defense for one year. The Rams offense was sputtering and the defense had to pick up the slack, so Wade got the boot, and surprise they “rebounded” next year when the offense got it together. (After they traded for Stafford, oddly enough).
It’s why one-year coordinators always need a deeper look from teams than just “oh this guy did great, hire him for an HC job”.
