Completely agree. Sadly, the Apple TV 3 had exactly this — standard ‘templates’ for apps to use so they all behaved in a similar way. The templates available weren’t great, but instead of improve them, Apple decided to just let app developers do whatever they wanted. The result is the mess you describe.
